Biographical History

Professor Edward Orton Jr. founded the nation's first Department of Ceramic Engineering at the Ohio State University in 1894. He was responsible for establishing the Engineering Experiment Station, and served as State Geologist (1899-1906) and Dean of the College of Engineering (1902-1906, 1910-1915). Very active in military affairs, Prof. Orton was one of the four co-authors of the original National Defense Act (1916), with its provision for the R.O.T.C. He was also active in civic affairs, twice President of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, and a supporter of numerous charitable organizations. One of his major benefactions was Orton Memorial Library in Orton Hall, a tribute to his father (Edward Orton Sr., first President of OSU).
