Biographical History
Professor Edward Orton Jr. founded the nation's first Department of Ceramic Engineering at the Ohio State University in 1894. He was responsible for establishing the Engineering Experiment Station, and served as State Geologist (1899-1906) and Dean of the College of Engineering (1902-1906, 1910-1915). Very active in military affairs, Prof. Orton was one of the four co-authors of the original National Defense Act (1916), with its provision for the R.O.T.C.
