Harlow Stearns Gale was born on June 29, 1862 in Minneapolis. He attended Yale University, earning his B.A. in 1885. He completed advanced studies at Yale University, University of Cambridge and the University of Leipzig with Wilhelm Wundt in the fields of ethics, logic and psychology. In addition, he studied economics under William Watts Folwell at the University of Minnesota. He accepted a position at the University of Minnesota as an instructor in psychology in 1894. He introduced new courses to the curriculum including physiological psychology, child psychology, brain histology and advanced courses in the study of advertising. He also began a psychology laboratory on campus.

Mr. Gale had a tenuous career at the University of Minnesota. He was twice dismissed and then re-hired by the University and was finally forced to resign in 1903. After leaving the University, he went to work in the insurance field. After trying his hand at insurance, Gale worked as a principle clerk in charge of materials and cost records of sewer tunnels and storm drains for the City of Minneapolis. Even after he left the University, he continued to work as a independent investigator, teacher and lecturer, ran a private psychological laboratory and was involved with the Minnesota Academy of Science. Another interest of Mr. Gale, and his family, was music. He authored many musical criticisms during the 1900s. Mr. Gale passed away on December 22, 1945 in Minneapolis.
