Biographical History
Sir John Perceval, Earl of Egmont (1683-1748) was the first president of the Trustees of Georgia. He was born in county Cork, Ireland and was educated at Westminster School in London and at Magdalen College in Oxford. In 1703, he was elected to the Irish House of Commons for County Cork. He was elected to the British House of commons for Harwich in 1727, a position he held until 1734. In 1733, Perceval was made the Earl of Egmont in Ireland.
Egmont began as a student at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1699 and left in 1701 without a degree. In 1702, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. Egmont was a member of the Irish House of Commons for the county of Cork. He became a member of the new privy council in Ireland when George I became king. In 1715, he was made Baron Perceval of Burton in the county of Cork; in 1723, he was made Viscount Perceval of Kanturk in the county of Cork; and in 1733, he was made Earl of Egmont in the peerage of Ireland.
Sir John Perceval, Earl of Egmont (1683-1748), first president of the trustees appointed by Royal Charter for establishing the Colony of Georgia.
The first twenty years of Georgia history are referred to as Trustee Georgia because during that time a Board of Trustees governed the colony. England's King George signed a charter establishing the colony and creating its governing board on April 21, 1732. His action culminated a lengthy process. John Viscount Percival, the earl of Egmont, was the first president of the common council and the dominant figure among the Trustees until his retirement in 1742. He acted as Georgia's champion in Parliament. The New Georgia Encyclopedia. http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/nge/Article.jsp?id=h-816 Retrieved 4/9/2009.
