The Puerto Rican Week Festival, (Festival Puertorriqueño Filadelfia), held for the first time in 1964, has been described as "the single most important event for Hispanics living in the Philadelphia region." Sponsored by the city's Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations, the festival includes the celebration of Puerto Rican Day, a parade (Desfile Puertorriqueño), a banquet, the Miss Puerto Rico-Philadelphia Pageant, a Mini-Olympics, Latin musical and dance performances, public service awards, and speeches focusing on the goals and needs of Philadelphia's Latinos. Additionally, the event generates opportunities for Latino businesses.
