Biographical History
On May 13, 1908, eight immigrant families from Norway organized this congregation under the leadership of Pastor H. Rogen of Canby. The first resident Pastor was C. C. A. Jensen, who came in 1909. Shortly after his arrival a temporary chapel was erected on the corner of Lovely Street and Fortune Avenue. Under the leadership of Rev. H. O. Hendrickson, who came in 1912, a permanent church was started in 1914 and completed in 1917. Services were conducted in the Norwegian language until a translation to English took place in the 1920s. A parsonage was built in 1929. Property for additional facilities was purchased in 1952, and a new structure was completed in 1953 with much of the work being done by volunteers. The church experienced great growth during World War II when thousands of people moved to Portland to work in the shipyards.
