Biographical History
Formed in 1967 under the USANC, the Office of Latin American Interests assumed the functions performed previously by the National Lutheran Council-Division of Lutheran World Federation Affairs' Department of Latin American Cooperation. (From 1947-1966, the National Lutheran Council's Executive Committee served as the USANC. From 1967-1976, it operated as a separate body and from 1977-1987 the USANC operated as Lutheran World Ministries.) One of the Office's main duties was to screen budget requests and suggest allocations to the LWF' Commission on Latin America. Stewart W. Herman, Jr. served as Executive Secretary of the NLC.
Division and Department (1956-63). In 1963, he left these positions to become President of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (Illinois). He served as a representative on the LWF's Commission on Latin America. The USANC's Office of Latin American Interests worked in collaboration with the Commission until 1970 at which time both Commission and the Office were disbanded under the LWF's newly imposed organizational structure.
