Biographical History

Jerome Liebling was an assistant professor and Donald Torbert was an associate professor in the art department at the University of Minnesota when they created the architectural exhibit in celebration of the Minnesota Centennial and the 75th anniversary of the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts.

From the guide to the A Century of Minnesota Architecture photographs, 1850-1958, (bulk 1956-1958), (University of Minnesota Libraries. Northwest Architectural Archives, Manuscripts Division [naa])

Born in New York City in 1924, Jerome Liebling was raised in Brooklyn and interrupted his studies at Brooklyn College to enlist in the U. S. Army during World War II.

After the war, with the aid of the G.I. Bill, Liebling returned to Brooklyn College where he studied photography with Walter Rosenblum, and filmmaking at the New School for Social Research. He also joined the prestigious New York Photo League, where he met and worked with some of the most respected documentary photographers of the era, including Paul Strand and Photo League founder, Sid Grossman.

At the University of Minnesota, Liebling launched a film and photography program, and later on, in 1969, he established the film and photography program (later, to include video) at the fledgling Hampshire College in Amherst, where he taught for the next 20 years. Liebling died at age 87 in July 2011
