Thaddeus Hoinko (b. 1895) was born in Ukraine, emigrated to Poland, and in 1922 came to America as an official of the Polish Consulate. Through his position, he became familiar with Polish Americans in major U.S. cities. He became a U.S. citizen in 1938. Hoinko was married to Marjorie Pitman of Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he operated a grocery for a time. He was hired by the American Polish Chamber of Commerce (New York) and wrote the column "Polonica America" for the organization's magazine Poland. In 1941, he became executive secretary of the Polish-American War Relief Society, later renamed "Polish War Relief," and in 1944 was appointed to the Polish Information Center in New York. From 1945-1964, he worked for Opportunity magazine in Chicago, Illinois.
