Biographical History
Born John M. Claiborne in Gibson County, Tenn.; Confederate officer; mustered 1861 into Company D, 8th Texas Cavalry Regiment, 8th (Terry's Texas Rangers); promoted sergeant major by Mar. 1862; appointed to adjutant on 31 Dec. 1862; wounded three times; acted in "secret service" behind enemy lines at Tennessee from July 1864 until at least December 1864; in Jan. 1865, General Hood reportedly gave him a release and letters to President Davis and recommended him with commendation for brigadier general; reported to have served as a general at Mumfordville, Ky., and Bentonville, N.C.
