Biographical History

Ashley, Samuel S. 1864-65 - field agent for U.S. Christian Commission. 1865-68 - supt. of schools for eastern district of N.C. for A.M.A. and Freedmen's Bureau. 1868 - member of N.C. Constitutional Convention; was elected first State Supt. of Public Instruction, N.C., served 1868-70. 1870-74 - missionary pastor for A.M.A. in New Orleans and acting President of Straight University. 1875 - returned to home, Northboro, Mass., and then sent by AMA to Atlanta; was pastor, First Congregational Church and taught at Atlanta University, m.- Mary E; dtr., Mary A. was an AMA teacher.
