William Darlington was a physician and naturalist.

William Darlington was a resident of Chester County, Pa. A physician, botanist, and politician, he travelled to India as a ship's surgeon, served as a volunteer in the War of 1812, and was elected to three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He wrote on many subjects, especially natural history.

William Darlington was born on April 28, 1782 and died on April 23, 1863, in Chester County, Pa. He received his medical degree in 1804 from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania. He set up private practice in West Chester, Pa. and served as physician to the Chester County Alms House. During the War of 1812, Darlington served as an ensign in the "American Grays." He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to serve in the 14th and 16-17th Congresses of the United States (1815-1817, 1819-1823). As a statesman, Darlington was particularly interested in the abolition of slavery. After his departure from Congress, Darlington became the Pennsylvania State Canal Commissioner (1826), Prothonotary and Clerk of the Courts for Chester County (1826-1830), and State Commissioner in charge of state roads and railways (1830). He also was President of the Bank of Chester County (1830-1863). A renowned botanist, Darlington organized the Chester County Cabinet of Natural Sciences in 1826. His notable writings include Flora Cestrica (1837) and Agricultural Botany (1847). A species of Californian plants (Darlingtonia) was named after him. Darlington was a member of over 40 medical and scientific societies. He founded and served as president of the Chester County Medical Society.
