Biographical History

Appointed H.M. Deputy Commissary of Stores and Provisions at Detroit on Feb. 5, 1762. He served in this office until his resignation and his successor appointed in November 1779. He married Alice Haliburton (circa June 17, 1768), whose father had come to America circa 1758 as a British army chaplain, and whose half-brother was the famous John Kinzie. Upon Flemings resignation from his commissary post in Detroit, he removed with his family to New York City, where he died April 24, 1791. His widow married Nicholas Low, a leading merchant of New York. (from MS/FLEMING, S. ; letters to Charles Fay, Apr. 21 and 29, 1952) (blue index cards)
