The Baptist Missionary Society was founded in 1792, principally by William Carey, and was the first of modern missionary societies. The Society's early work began in 1793 in India under Carey's leadership. Its work extended into the East Indies and British West Indies in the early 19th century and, later, into Africa, Asia and Europe. The B.M.S., in cooperation with other mission societies, established Carey Hall and St. Andrews College, Birmingham,the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludiana and the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore.
