Biographical History

Weitzmann left his native Germany in 1935 for Princeton where he spent the remainder of his life, at the Institute for Advanced Study as a permanent member (1935-1972) and as a professor in Princeton University's Dept. of Art and Archaeology (1945-1972).

Weitzmann was also a visiting professor at Yale University and the University of Bonn, and he was associated with the Dumbarton Oaks Center for Byzantine Studies. His areas of scholarship included the history of Byzantine art, using studies of carved ivories, manuscripts, and icons, the history of manuscript illumination, classical monuments, medieval painting and sculpture, and Christian art and symbolism.
