Tomie dePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut in 1934 to Joseph and Florence dePaola . He has two sisters and one brother. His Italian and Irish family background is evident in many of his books. From an early age, Tomie and his parents knew he would be an artist. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York where he studied Art. His Master of Fine Arts degree was received from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California . He has also been awarded three honorary Doctorate degrees from separate Universities and Colleges.
Tomie's career as a professional artist and designer, former teacher of art, children's author and illustrator is expansive. He has designed greeting cards, posters, magazine and catalogue covers, record album covers, and theater costumes and sets. He has illustrated over two hundred books, and written over seventy. Tomie has won numerous awards, including the prestigious American Library Association 's Caldecott Honor Award for Strega Nona (1976), the University of Minnesota 's Kerlan Award (1981), the Catholic Library Association 's Regina Medal (1983), and the Smithsonian Institution 's Smithson Medal (1990).
Tomie's books have been published world-wide in fifteen different languages and he has over five million copies in print. Many of his books are largely autobiographical such as Nana Upstairs, Nana Downstairs, Tom, and The Art Lesson . Tomie currently resides in New Hampshire with his four Welsh Terrier dogs, Madison, Moffat, Morgan and Markus.

Tomie De Paola was born on September 15, 1934, in Meriden, Connecticut. He studied art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and received his B.F.A. in 1956. He later received an M.F.A. from the California College of Arts and Crafts. Early in his career he worked as a freelance artist, designed, painter, set designer, and teacher. In 1965 he illustrated Sound and Wheels, two informational books for children by Lisa Miller, and in 1966 published his own book, The Wonderful Dragon of Timlin . Throughout his long and prolific career, he has illustrated over 100 books for children, including informational books, realistic picture books, folktales, and other works, written by himself or others.
De Paola's works are noted for their humor and distinctibe illustrations; he is also noted for his versatility and range of topics. His own stories, such as The Art Lesson and Nana Upstairs and Nana Downstairs often draw upon his childhood and are cited for their sensitivity, realism, and lack of didacticism. His folktales and religious stories, such as The Clown of God and Francis, the Poor Man of Assisi and other, also display these qualities. His adaptation of Strega Nona, an Italian tale, received a Caldecott Honor citation in 1976. His illustrations are praised by critics for their lavishness and the care he takes to get his meaning across to readers, and the affection and respect he shows for both subject and audience. In 1981 he received the Kerlan Award for his contribution to childrens' literature.
