Biographical History

The ship Apollo was built in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1831. She carried sugar and syrups to the United States from the West Indies before being added to the California Fleet. She sailed from New York to San Francisco in January 1849, and after arriving was turned into a warehouse connected to Howison's pier. In the early 1850s she was used as a boarding house and coffee saloon known as the Apollo Saloon.

From the description of Map showing the daily progression of the ship Apollo from New York to San Francisco, 1849, January-September. (Huntington Library, Art Collections & Botanical Gardens). WorldCat record id: 741200777
