Biography
Muir Stephen Fairchild (b. Sept. 2, 1894, Bellingham, Washington-d. March 17, 1950, Fort Myer, Virginia), General in the U.S. Air Force, earned his flying wings early in 1918 and began to fly bombers on night missions with the French forces (World War I). During the 1920s and 1930s, he served in a number of engineering posts in the U.S., participated in the Pan American Good Will Tour, and received further training. During World War II, General Fairchild served as assistant chief of Air Corps, director of military requirements, and as a member of the Joint Strategic Survey Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He died while on active duty as vice chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force.
