Author James Grant Wilson was born in Scotland but brought to the United States as an infant. He worked as a journalist in Chicago and served as a General in the Union Army during the Civil War, settling in New York afterward. He helped John Fiske edit Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography, edited collections of poetry, and wrote biographies of U.S. Grant and other military figures.
