Biographical History
Karen Cushman was born in Chicago in 1941. She attended Stanford University earning a B.A. in English. She married, earned additional degrees, had a child, and became an adjunct faculty member at John F. Kennedy University in Museum Studies. In the late 1980s her interest again returned to writing, and she published her first young adult historical novel, Catherine, Called Birdy in 1994 which was named a Newbery Honor Book. Her second novel, The Midwife's Apprentice received the Newbery Medal in 1995.
