Barbara Brooks Wallace was born in Soochow, China. She spent her childhood in China and the Phillipines. In 1945, she earned her B.A.degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her first book, Claudia was published in 1969. She won the William Allen White Children's Book Award in 1983 for Peppermints in the Parlor and the Edgar All Poe Award for best juvenile mystery for The Twin in the Tavern in 1994. Barbara Brooks Wallace is known for her young adult fantasies and Gothic fiction, as well as the "Claudia" and the "Hawkins" series. She has been the recipient of the National League of American PEN Women Juvenile Book Award (1970, 1974), an International Youth Library Choice (1975 - 2 awards), William Allen White Children's Book Award (1983), the Booklist Editor's Choice (1993) and the Edgar Allen Poe Award (juvenile mystery, 1994).
