Biographical History

North Dakotan and University of North Dakota graduate, teacher, biologist, and vocal supporter of the League of Nations and the World Court (Permanent Court of International Justice).

N. Johanna Kildahl (1868-1967) was born in Wastedo, Minnesota. Her family moved to Towner County, Dakota Territory in August, 1883 where they homesteaded in the Mauvais Coulee Valley near Lac aux Morts. She taught in rural Towner County schools and then attended the University of North Dakota (B.S., 1898; M.S. biology, 1900). Kildahl was an instructor in the Biology Dept. and Assistant Curator of the Museum (1898-1905). She went on to be awarded a Ph. D. from the University of Chicago (1909), becoming the first female U.N.D. graduate to receive a doctoral degree. Kildahl remained in Chicago and taught biology in the school system there. N. Johanna Kildahl died on June 5, 1967.
