Biographical History
David Spence Hill served as President of UNM from 1919-1927. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on December 14, 1873. Hill earned his undergraduate degree at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia and graduated with a Ph.D. from Clark University, Massachusetts in 1907. Prior to coming to UNM, he taught classes in education at the University of Illinois. He had also taught at Tulane University, Peabody Teachers College in Nashville, Cornell University, and the University of California at Berkeley. One of Hill's major contributions to the University was to raise scholastic standards high enough to secure national accreditation for the institution. After leaving UNM, he returned to the South and took a position at the University of Alabama. He died in November of 1951 at the age of seventy-seven.
