Biographical History
Donelson Caffery was born near Franklin, La., on September 10, 1835, and served as a lieutenant in the 13th Louisiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He married Bethia Richardson in 1869. He was a planter in St. Mary Parish, La., state senator for St. Mary Parish (1892-1894), and U.S. senator from Louisiana (1893-1901). He died in New Orleans, La., on December 30, 1906. His son, John Murphy Caffery, was a 1901 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, a prominent St. Mary Parish planter, and state senator for St. Mary Parish (1928-1932).

Donelson Caffery, Jr., was editor and manager of the ST. MARY AND FRANKLIN BANNER-TRIBUNE. He was also the son of Louisiana Senator Donelson Caffery (1835-1906).
