Biographical History

The Australian Women's Army Service was established in 1941 to release men from certain military duties for service with fighting units in World War II. Members of AWAS served in a variety of roles including clerks, typists, cooks and drivers. AWAS was disbanded in 1946. The Australian Women's Army Service Association was formed to extend welfare assistance, promote social gatherings and foster goodwill to former members of AWAS, especially by way of annual reunions. The Western Australian association closed down on 7 February 2008.
