Biographical History
Paul Chikamasa Horiuchi (1906-1999) artist. Horiuchi was born in Japan in 1906 and learned calligraphy and sumi techniques as a child. In late 1920, he departed for America and found work with the Union Pacific Railroad in Wyoming, using his mother's maiden name of Kamakura, where his father was already an employee. Paul Horiuchi held that job for 20 years. In 1946 he moved to Seattle to study with Zen Master, Tamotsu Takazaki, who introduced him to Mark Tobey. Horiuchi completed his first collage, his signature artform, in 1954.
