Lyons was born and educated in Tasmania. He was a teacher before being elected in 1909 to the Tasmanian House of Assembly where he served as Minister for Education and Railways (1914-1916) and Premier and Treasurer (1923-1928). In 1929 he resigned to enter the House of Representatives for the seat of Wilmot. During the next ten years Lyons held portfolios of P.M.G. and Minister for Works and Railways (1929-1931) and Acting Treasurer (1930-1933) in the Labor Government of J.H. Scullin. In 1931 he formed the United Australia Party and was its leader (1931-1939). He was Prime Minister from 1932 until his death in 1939.
