Librarian and historian.
American historical editor, bibliographer, and statistician.
Worthington Chauncey Ford (1858-1941), the eldest son of Gordon Lester Ford and Emily Fowler Ford, first worked as a cashier for the Long Island Railroad and wrote articles on economics and civics. In 1885 he was appointed chief of the Bureau of Statistics of the U.S. State Dept., then in 1893 he became chief of the Treasury Dept. Bureau of Statistics. He was head of the Boston Public Library's Dept. of Documents and Statistics from 1897 to 1902, chief of the Manuscripts Division of the Library of Congress from 1902 to 1909, editor of the Massachusetts Historical Society until 1929, and director of the European mission for the Library of Congress, 1929-1935. Ford wrote and edited historical works and was considered an expert on George Washington, John Quincy Adams, Abraham Lincoln, and the economist David Wells.
