Biographical History
Printer and publisher of Leipzig, Germany.
Bernhard Tauchnitz was a German publisher; he is best remembered for helping to popularize English and American works in Germany.
Epithet: publisher
Christian Bernhard, Freiherr von Tauchnitz, was a relative of the Tauchnitz family of publishers. He opened his own publishing and printing house in Leipzig in 1837, paying for exclusive rights to reprint British and American authors in Germany. This series of inexpensive, paperbound volumes proved to be quite popular with English-speaking tourists, and a series of German authors and special students' editions followed. He was made Freiherr in 1877, and served as British Consul-General to Saxony for many years. He developed friendships with many authors, including Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins.
