Lawyer and Judge in Wayne County, Mich. b. 1814. d. 1898.
Samuel Townsend Douglass was born in Wallingford, Vt. on Feb. 28, 1814, son of Benjamin Douglass. His parents moved to Fredonia, N.Y., where he grew up and was educated at Fredonia Academy. Douglass studied law in the office of Judge James Mullett of the New York Supreme Court. In 1837, Mr. Douglass came to Detroit. There he met Elizabeth Campbell, and after a long engagement, they were married in 1856. In 1860 they moved to Gross Ile, where they owned a stone house on a two hundred acre farm. Samuel and Elizabeth Campbell had three children. Mr. Douglass was admitted to the Michigan bar, and in 1852 he was elected Circuit Judge of Wayne County, a position he held until 1857, where he returned to private practice. Samuel Douglass died on Mar. 5, 1898.
