Biographical History
Joseph May Swing (b. Feb. 28, 1894, Jersey City, N.J.-d. Dec. 9, 1984), Lieutenant General, U. S. Army, graduated from West Point in 1915. During World War I, he served as Aide to the Army Chief of Staff, and following the War, he served with the 1st Field Artillery, was an instructor at the Field Artillery School, and was Assistant Chief of Staff (Intelligence) and Chief of Staff, 2nd Division. During World War II, he was Artillery Commander for the 1st Cavalry, 82nd Infantry, and 82nd Airborne Divisions, and Commanding General, 11th Airborne Division. General Swing retired from the Army in 1954 and became Commissioner, Bureau of Immigration & Naturalization until 1961.
