Biographical History

Vernon Lee was the pseudonym for Violet Paget (1856-1935), a British writer of supernatural fiction, poetry and essays who lived in Italy 1889-1935.

Vernon Lee was the pen name of Violet Paget, an enigmatic English author with special interest in history and aesthetics. An English citizen, she was born and spent much of her life outside of England. Largely self-taught, the breadth and depth of her knowledge was extraordinary, and prominent in her writing. Her somewhat volatile personal life featured prominent feuds, failed lesbian relationships, and public disdain for her pacifism, but her eclectic writing crossed genres and continues to illuminate the idiosyncratic style of the author and her times.
