Biographical History

Sonny Clements played basketball and baseball during his high school years at Rhine High School in Rhine, Ga. and college years at Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University) and later played minor league baseball. After his baseball career was cut short by injury, he entered into a teaching career. He came to Columbus College (now Columbus State University) in 1959 as head of the physical education department, athletic director, and head basketball coach. Clements built the college's men's basketball program from scratch and developed other athletic programs for both men and women. He served as head basketball coach for 21 seasons and athletic director for 24 years.
