Biographical History

This collection includes letters from three members of the politically powerful and affluent Livingston family of New York: Philip Livingston (1686-1749), Second Lord of the Manor in Albany, and two of his sons; Robert Livingston (1708-1790), Third Lord of the Manor, and Peter Van Brugh Livingston (1710-1793). Philip Livingston, in addition to his mercantile activities (the focus of this collection), was town clerk of Albany and Secretary of Indian Affairs from 1721 to 1749, member of the Legislative Council from 1725 to 1749, and was a colonel in the provincial militia. His son, Robert, inherited the post of Lord of the Livingston Manor, was a member of the Assembly for the Manor from 1737 to 1758, and served as colonel in the provincial militia. Peter Van Brugh Livingston became a wealthy New York City merchant active in provincial politics. He served as treasurer and president of the First Provincial Congress of 1775.
