Biographical History

Jeremiah La Touche Cuyler was born in New York to Telamon and Jeanne Cuyler in 1768. His family moved to Savannah, Georgia, where his father died. When Jeremiah's mother returned to New York, he remained in Savannah. On April 21, 1793, he married Margaret Elizabeth Clarendon (December 27, 1777-August 1835). They had eleven children. The first six were baptized at Lutheran Church of the Ascension, and the remaining children were baptized at Christ Episcopal Church in Savannah, Georgia.

Jeremiah's public positions included the post of Receiver of Tax Returns. He was elected in 1795 from Effingham County, Georgia. On October 5, 1807, he was elected a state senator from Chatham County, Georgia. He served as a Savannah Alderman from 1808 to 1809. His name appears on an 1808 Chatham Artillery Roll as Gunner no. 2. He was a U.S. District Judge from 1821 to 1839.

Margaret Cuyler died in August of 1835 of dropsy. Jeremiah died suddenly on May 6, 1839. On February 6, 1857, he and several other Cuylers were reinterred in Lot 553 at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia.
