Educator William B. Robertson was born in Roanoke, Virginia in 1933. He received a B. S. in Secondary Education in 1954 and a B. S. in Elementary Education in 1956. Both degrees were earned at Bluefield State College, Bluefield, West Virginia. Robertson worked in public schools in Roanoke. He founded a camp for the mentally impaired in Virginia in 1970 and served on the staff of Virginia Governor Linwood Holton from 1970-1973. Robertson has worked for five U. S. Presidents: Richard Nixon appointed him to the Presidential Committee on Mental Retardation; Gerald Ford made him Director of the Peace Corps for Kenya and the Seychelles and he kept that position during the term of Jimmy Carter; he worked for Ronald Reagan as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs; and George H. W. Bush appointed him to the Take Pride in America Committee and made him co-chair of the Federal Task Force on Disabilities. He has founded Sister Cities programs in Virginia, and through CHEER (the Center for Health, Education, and Economic Research), donated over one million new books and teacher training materials to schools and libraries in South Africa. Robertson married Johnnie Early in 1953 and had two children. That marriage ended in divorce. He married Ruth Price in 2000 and moved to Tampa, Florida, where he teaches middle school.
