Biographical History

Dr. Henry Hulst was born in Friesland province, the Netherlands, on June 25, 1859, the son of Rev. L. J. Hulst. Henry came to Ill. in 1859 and to Grand Rapids (Mich.) in 1876. Initially, Henry studied theology, but in 1888 he graduated as the president of his class from the medical school of the University of Michigan. After graduation, Dr. Hulst studied at the insane asylum in Traverse City (Mich.), where he learned about hynotism. He was interested in the medical application of hypnotism, which he studied in Paris, and Amsterdam in 1892. At one point to prove his point, he performed an operation using hypnotism instead of anesthetia, keeping his patient free from pain and shock throughout the successful operation. He also advocated using hypnosis as a treatment for homosexuals instead of castration in 1893. By the late 1890s, Dr. Hulst became a pioneer in the roentgen ray or x-ray field, and served as the 7th President of ARRS, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the oldest radiology society in the U.S. Dr. Hulst served as the U.S. representative [President] of the American X-ray Society to the International Congress of the X-Ray in Amsterdam in 1916. A diabetic by the age of 51, he studied the effect of a normal diet and adequate insulin to counteract blood sugar. Dr. Hulst died in Jan. 1949 at the age of 89. Dr. Hulst married Cornelia Steketee (1865-1957) in 1889. She was born in Grand Rapids, the daughter of John Steketee, a vice counsul for the Netherlands. Cornelia graduated from Grand Rapids High School and received an honory degree from the University of Michigan in 1914. She retired as the head of the English Department at Central High School in 1917. Cornelia was also a Greek mythology scholar. She published a number of papers and a book on the topic. Cornelia died on in Sept. 1957 at the age of 92. (This information is from the collection.)
