Biographical History
Charles Horner Greer Macafee was born in Omagh, Northern Ireland. In 1921 he graduated in medicine from the Queen's University of Belfast with first-class honours. He was appointed to the chair of midwifery and gynaecology at Queen's in 1945 and held this position until his retirement in 1963. He was an accomplished obstetrician, gynaecological surgeon and teacher. He was a founding Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, serving as Vice-President from 1961-64. In 1961 he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by the Queen. His guiding philosophy was summed up in his words: "While medicine is undoubtedly a science, it is a science in which the scientist is dealing with people and not things.' He died on 16 August 1978 at his home in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland.
