Scientist, university and government administrator, and consultant to government and industry; b. Horton Guyford Stever, 1916.
Horton Guyford Stever was born on October 24, 1916 in Corning New York. He received an A.B. in Physics from Colgate University in 1938, and a Ph.D. in Physics from California Institute of Technology in 1941. He was a staff member of the Radiation Laboratory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1941 to 1942, from 1942 to 1945 he served as Scientific Liaison Officer for the National Defense Research Council in London, and from 1945 to 1946 he was on the Guided Missiles Commission, Joint Chiefs of Staff. Stever enjoyed a long and distinguished career in academia, affiliated with MIT and Carnegie Mellon University. From 1946 to 1965 he served with MIT as faculty, Associate Dean of Engineering, and Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. During this period he was also Chief Scientist with the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1956. In 1965 he left MIT to become President of Carnegie Mellon University. He left academia in 1972 to become Director of the National Science Foundation, 1972 to 1976. During the Ford administration, he was Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, 1976 to 1977. After 1977 he served as a corporate director and science consultant for universities and other organizations.
