Biographical History

David Goodwin Barr (1895-1970), born in Myrtlewood, Alabama, attended Alabama Presbyterian College. He graduated from Command and General Staff School in 1936 and the Army War College in 1939. After enlisting with the infantry reserve in 1917, he fought in France with the 18th Infantry, 1st Division, during World War I. He served with the Washington Provisional Brigade, from 1936 to 1938 and again from 1939 to 1940. He was supply officer of I Armored Corps from 1940 to June 1942, when he was promoted to brigadier general and chief of staff of the Armored Force. He made major general in February 1944, during his assignment as chief of staff at headquarters of North African Theater of Operations from January to September 1944. He served as chief of staff of Sixth Army Group, from September 1944 to July 1945, and then chief of personnel for Army Ground Forces, from July 1945 to January 1948. After World War II, he was commanding general of the 7th Infantry Division, May 1949-February 1951. He retired as commanding general of the Armored Center, Fort Knox, in February 1952. His awards included the Distinguished Service Cross, three Distinguished Service Medals, two Silver Stars, the Legion of Merit, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
