Biographical History

The Western Forestry and Conservation Association was founded in 1909. It was originally composed of "three private forestry and forest fire associations and two conservation associations in the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana." The purpose of the organization was to work for better fire laws, and to protect forests against fire losses. Moreover, it worked for forest progress in legislation; it advocated better forest management, and called for progress in practical fire work. Since its origin, the Association has been instrumental in advancing the cause of forest fire laws, forest insurance, forest taxation, reforestation laws, and it has helped formulate "one of the most productive pieces of legislation" -- the Clark-Mcnary Act.
