Biographical History

Sir Matthew Nathan (1862-1939) served as Governor of Queensland from December 1920 until 1925. During his term, he travelled extensively around Queensland. He also visited the southern states in 1922. He actively supported the boy and girl guide movements, sought to promote British immigration to Queensland and took an interest in the study of the Great Barrier Reef. He served as Chancellor of the University of Queensland 1922-26. He retired to his house at West Coker, Somerset and was high sheriff of the county to 1934.He died at West Coker on 18 April 1939. A portion of his library was donated to the John Oxley Library after World War II. [Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography]

Sir Matthew Nathan was Governor of Queensland from 1920 to 1925. He was also Chancellor of the University of Queensland from 1922 to 1926. His interests during his governorship of Queensland included local history and the origin of Queensland place names.
