Carl Christian Hein was ordained by the Joint Synod of Ohio on April 15, 1888. Hein served parishes in Wisconsin (1888-1891), Michigan (1891-1902), and Ohio (1902-1925). From 1912-1920, he served as president of the Western District of the Joint Synod of Ohio. From 1920-1924, he was the Joint Synod of Ohio's vice president; and, from 1924-1930, served as its president. Upon formation of the ALC, he was elected its first president. When the National Lutheran Council (NLC) was organized in 1918, Dr. Hein became a commissioner. From 1927-1932 he was vice president of the NLC, and its president from 1932-1937. Hein was suddenly stricken by.

A heart attack while attending a meeting of the Illinois District of the ALC held in Muscatine, Iowa in June of 1936. At first, he failed to recognize the serious condition of his health. However, he was in critical condition for a number of weeks at the Milwaukee Lutheran Hospital, where he was taken at his own request. After returning to his duties in September of 1936, Hein's health gradually declined. He was admitted to St. Francis Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, on April 28, 1937 where he died the following morning.
