Author, bibliographer.
Dr. Hellmut E. Lehmann-Haupt (1903-1992) was born in Berlin and educated at the Universities of Berlin, Vienna and Frankfurt where he concentrated on the fine arts and early book illustration. Coming to the U.S. in 1929, Lehmann-Haupt was named curator of the rare book department of Columbia University Library the following year. He later served as an assistant professor of book arts in Columbia's School of Library Service. He became a widely published bibliography expert and author with over 200 titles to his credit. In 1950 he took a position as chief bibliography expert for H.P.Kraus, a rare book and manuscript dealer in New York city. During World War II Lehmann-Haupt served as civil Arts Liaison Administration Officer (Nov. 1946-Feb. 1948) and, in March 1948, Art Intelligence Coordination Officer.
