Biographical History
John Addington Symonds was an English essayist, biographer, poet, and translator.
British author, poet, critic, and translator.
English author John Addington Symonds was a respected and prolific writer who wrote stylishly on diverse subjects. Symond's father held literary parties, and the young man was able to meet and listen to Tennyson, Gladstone, and many others. A fine scholar, he did well at Oxford, but ill health and emotional stress plagued him; he found a release in writing, and produced translations, biographies, poetry, and criticism, although he is probably best known for his seven-volume history of the Italian Renaissance. A candid autobiography, published posthumously, revealed his life-long homosexuality, and the impact this secret had on his work and his life in Victorian England.
