Biographical History

Williamsboro, N.C., natives Walter Austin Bullock and George Tarry Bullock entered North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts as freshmen in 1891. Walter graduated with an agricultural degree in 1895, and then worked for a big farming concern near Bainbridge, Ga. He then moved to Puerto Rico, where he raised shade tobacco for American Tobacco Company. He and George later bought a large farm near Red Springs, N.C., which was very successful until 1922, when the price of cotton dropped. He continued farming on a smaller scale until his death in 1943.

Due to illness and financial problems, George did not complete his college coursework. After leaving North Carolina State, he worked at Edgecombe Test Farm, and then worked in Georgia and Puerto Rico. After the Red Springs farm failed, he returned to Puerto Rico and worked for the American Sugar Cane Company. He then went to Cuba with the Cuban Land and Leaf Tobacco Company, a subsidiary of American Tobacco Company. He stayed in Cuba until his retirement in 1952. He died in Red Springs in 1955.
