Samuel Lawrence Gouverneur (1799-1867), American politician and capitalist, was postmaster of New York City from 1828 to 1836. His wife, Maria Hester Monroe, was the daughter of U.S. President James Monroe. After 1850, Gouverneur moved to Maryland.
