Biographical History

Entomologist. Roland Fountain Hussey was born on November 16, 1896. After receiving his doctoral degree from Harvard in 1923 he taught at New York University before pursuing a business career in 1927. However, he continued to engage in field research, principally in Paraguay. In 1947, he returned to teaching at Florida Southern College in Lakeland and came to the University of Florida in 1953. He retired in 1967.

Roland Fountain Hussey was born on November 16, 1896. He received an A.B. degree from the University of Michigan in 1918, an MS degree from Harvard University in 1921, and a Sc.D. degree also from Harvard University in 1923. He taught at the University of Michigan (1918), the University of Minnesota (1918-20), and then at New York University (1923-26). From 1926 to 1947 he pursued a business career in New York City and worked as an assistant comptroller as well as at other administrative jobs. During this time he spent a year (1931-32) in Paraguay doing entomological reconnaissance. In 1947 he resumed his teaching career at Florida Southern College where he taught biology as an assistant professor (1947-51), an associate professor (1951-52 and a professor (1952-53). In the summers of 1950, 1952, and 1953 he was associate curator of insects in the Museum of Zoology at the University of Michigan. In 1953 he came to the University of Florida where he was an instructor in Biological Sciences until 1954, then an assistant professor (1954-58), an associate professor and professor of biology (1959-1960), and a full professor and professor of biology (1961-67).
