Biographical History

Born in 1927, John R. Kreuger taught Turkic and Mongolian languages in the department of Uralic and Altaic Studies at Indiana University Bloomington from 1962-1985. During his career, he was an active member of the Mongolia Society and accomplished writer, translator, and editor of works relating to Central Asian languages.

John R. Krueger was born on March 14, 1927 in Fremont, Nebraska. His family moved to Washington, D.C. in 1940, where he soon developed an interest in languages. After working for the Federal Civil Service, Krueger received his B.A. from George Washington University, spending time in Denmark on a Fulbright Scholarship. He received his PhD in Mongolian from the University of Washington in 1960, and taught German there and at Reed College in Oregon during his studies. After a brief stint teaching Asian languages at the University of California Berkeley he joined the department of Uralic and Altaic Studies at Indiana University Bloomington in 1962. There he taught Turkic and Mongolian languages until his retirement in 1985.

Dr. Krueger was an active writer, editor and translator of works in Central Asian languages. During his career he published dozens of articles, linguistic studies, and reviews. He contributed to major dictionaries in Mongolian languages and also provided subject articles to a variety of encyclopedias. He was an active member of the Mongolia Society throughout his life, and continued to do editorial work long into his retirement.
