Biographical History

Bernardo Ortiz de Montellano, a native of Mexico City, was a student at the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria, where he met and began collaborating with the writers who would become part of the literary group the Contemporáneos. In 1928 he co-founded the literary magazine CONTEMPORANEOS and served as its editor from 1929 to 1931. Ortiz de Montellano translated Nahuatl poetry and published LA POESIA INDIGENA DE MEXICO, in which he analysed the poetry of the POPOL-VUH and CHILAM BALAM DE CHUMAYEL.
