Biographical History
At a meeting held by the Concord Social Library on Oct. 11 1851, it was voted "To give the Library to the town on condition they shall establish a public library on the plan contemplated by the Act passed May 24, 1851, entitled 'An Act to authorise cities and towns to establish and maintain public libraries'." At a Town Meeting on Nov. 10, 1851, it was voted to Accept the Concord Town Library, and to house it in the Court House. The original Committee members were John S. Keyes, Addison G. Fay, A.A. Kelsey, F.R. Gourgas, and Simon Brown.
(Cont.) Later members included George Heywood, Ralph Waldo Emerson and E.R. Hoar (Chair). The Concord Town Library was succeeded by the Concord Free Public Library (its act of incorporation dated Mar. 24, 1873), the land and new building for which were donated and erected by William Munroe. (The Concord Free Public Library was dedicated Oct. 1, 1873).
